PDP Crisis Deepens in Moro as Stakeholders Disown Communiqué on Kwara North Senate Ticket

Stakeholders Question Use of Attendance Register, Say Meeting Was for Reconciliation, Not Release of Senatorial Ticket

By NupekoTV Correspondent

The controversy surrounding the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Kwara North Senatorial ticket has deepened following fresh claims by stakeholders in Moro Local Government Area that they were not aware of, nor did they authorise, a communiqué reportedly issued in their name concerning the future of the party's senatorial ticket.
The development follows the circulation of a communiqué purportedly emanating from an Expanded Critical Stakeholders and Local Government Executive Committee meeting of the PDP in Moro Local Government, held on Monday, August 17, 2026.
The communiqué claimed that the meeting resolved, among other issues, to release the PDP Kwara North Senatorial ticket for further review and consideration by the party leadership, citing the numerical strength of the Nupe/Baruba-speaking communities across Kwara North.

It also reportedly directed Engr. Suleiman Rotimi Iliasu to submit himself to the party leadership in accordance with an alleged gentleman's agreement reached before the party's senatorial primary.

However, NupekoTV's findings indicate that some stakeholders whose names and signatures reportedly appeared on the attendance register attached to the communiqué are distancing themselves from the document, insisting that they neither discussed nor endorsed the resolutions contained in it.

Stakeholder: 'We Were Not Aware of Any Communiqué'

Speaking with a NupekoTV correspondent on Tuesday, one of the PDP stakeholders in Moro Local Government, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the meeting was primarily convened to discuss strategic issues, reconciliation and strengthening of the party ahead of the 2027 elections, rather than to deliberate on the release of the senatorial ticket.
According to the stakeholder, participants were surprised to subsequently see a communiqué containing resolutions that they said were not presented to them during the meeting.

> “We are not aware of the communiqué. The meeting was called for strategic discussions and reconciliation among PDP members. The issue contained in that communiqué was not what we discussed at the meeting.”

The stakeholder also questioned the use of the attendance register, alleging that participants had been informed that their signatures would be used for administrative purposes, including arrangements concerning payments to those who attended the meeting.

According to the account given to NupekoTV, participants were reportedly expecting a payment of ₦200,000 in connection with their attendance, and the attendance register was presented in that context.

The stakeholder expressed concern that the same names and signatures could subsequently appear to have been used to give the impression of collective endorsement for political resolutions that participants said they had not considered or approved.

'Our Names Cannot Be Used to Endorse What We Did Not Discuss'

The stakeholder maintained that those whose names appeared on the attendance list should be given the opportunity to publicly clarify whether they attended the meeting and, more importantly, whether they endorsed the communiqué.

The development raises questions over the distinction between attendance at a political meeting and endorsement of resolutions allegedly produced from that meeting.

NupekoTV understands that the rejoinder circulated by concerned Moro PDP stakeholders similarly questioned the authenticity and authorisation of the communiqué and called for verification of the attendance register by the appropriate party organs.

Moro's Longstanding Agitation for Political Representation

The dispute comes against the backdrop of a longstanding agitation among some Moro political actors for greater representation in elective positions within Kwara North.

Moro Local Government is currently at the centre of the controversy because Engr. Suleiman Rotimi Iliasu, who emerged as the PDP candidate for the Kwara North Senatorial District following the party's primary, is from Moro.

Some stakeholders argue that the emergence of a Moro indigene as the party's senatorial candidate represents an important political opportunity for the local government, particularly against the background of previous complaints about limited opportunities for Moro to produce lawmakers.

The stakeholder who spoke with NupekoTV questioned why Moro's political interest should now be subjected to another arrangement after the local government had secured the senatorial ticket through the party's internal electoral process.

> “Moro has been agitating for lawmakers' representation. Now that Moro has been given the ticket, why should Moro be sacrificed again?”

The stakeholder further argued that the political interests of an entire local government should not be subordinated to the ambition of any individual or group.

'Moro Should Not Be Sacrificed for One Man's Ambition'

The stakeholder insisted that the controversy should not be reduced to a personal battle involving individual aspirants, but should instead be viewed through the broader question of fair representation, party democracy and the political future of Moro Local Government.

He said Moro PDP members would continue to support the party but would resist any attempt to use an unauthorised document to surrender what they consider to be a legitimate political opportunity for the local government.

The development also puts renewed focus on the alleged Memorandum of Understanding or gentleman's agreement referenced in the disputed communiqué.

While the communiqué claimed that Engr. Rotimi Iliasu should submit himself to the party leadership based on the terms of an earlier arrangement, the stakeholders who disputed the document said such a position could not legitimately be imposed through a communiqué they did not knowingly endorse.

Questions for PDP Leadership

The controversy has now placed several questions before the PDP leadership in Kwara State and at the local government level.

Among them are: Who formally convened the meeting? What resolutions were actually reached? Who drafted the communiqué? Who authorised its publication? Did the persons whose names and signatures appeared on the attendance register endorse the document? And was the issue of releasing the Kwara North senatorial ticket actually discussed and voted upon?

These questions are likely to become central to the ongoing debate over the PDP's senatorial arrangement in Kwara North.

For now, the competing documents present two sharply different accounts of what transpired at the Moro PDP meeting.

While one document presents the meeting as having formally resolved to release the senatorial ticket for further party review, the rejoinder and accounts obtained by NupekoTV from stakeholders challenge that claim and demand verification of the process.

NupekoTV has not independently verified the authenticity of the disputed attendance register or established the identities of all persons who attended the meeting. The allegations regarding the use of the attendance register and the purported ₦200,000 payment also remain claims by the stakeholder and would require independent confirmation.

The development underscores the growing political sensitivity surrounding the 2027 Kwara North Senatorial contest, with the PDP now facing the challenge of resolving the dispute through transparent consultation and a process acceptable to all concerned stakeholders.

NupekoTV will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as more information becomes available.
