Appeal Court Upholds Death Sentence for Abdulrahman Bello Over Murder of Kwara Student
The Court of Appeal, Ilorin Judicial Division, has affirmed the death sentence imposed on Abdulrahman Bello for the gruesome murder of Hafsoh Yetunde Lawal, a student of the Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin.
In a unanimous judgment delivered by a panel led by Honourable Justice Gabriel Omoniyi Kolawole, the appellate court dismissed Bello’s appeal, ruling that it lacked merit. The court held that the prosecution successfully proved the charges of murder and unlawful possession of human parts beyond reasonable doubt.
The judges further stated that the trial court properly evaluated all evidence presented before arriving at its verdict, thereby justifying both the conviction and the sentence of death by hanging.
Abdulrahman Bello had been found guilty of murdering his girlfriend, Hafsoh Yetunde Lawal, and dismembering her body in what was alleged to be an act linked to money rituals.
The prosecution team was led by the Kwara State Attorney General, Ibrahim Sulyman, alongside Issa Zakari, Chief State Counsel, and B.L. Abdulsalam, Assistant Chief State Counsel from the Ministry of Justice.
The ruling highlights the judiciary’s commitment to upholding justice and ensuring that criminal cases are decided strictly based on the law and credible evidence. It also reinforces public confidence in Nigeria’s judicial system and the appellate process.
Despite the affirmation of his conviction, Bello retains the right to pursue any further appeals available under Nigerian law.
