BREAKING: Abducted Oyo Pupils, Teachers Regain Freedom After 56 Days in Captivity

The pupils and teachers abducted by gunmen from three schools in Ahoro Esiele Community, Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, have regained their freedom after spending 56 days in captivity.

The victims were kidnapped on May 15, 2026, when armed attackers invaded Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School and L.A. Primary School in the community. The attack claimed the life of one teacher, Michael Oyedokun, while dozens of pupils and teachers were taken into the forest.

Their abduction sparked widespread concern across Nigeria, with parents, teachers' unions, civil society groups and government officials calling for their immediate rescue. The incident also triggered an indefinite strike by public school teachers in Oyo State before the action was later suspended following assurances from the government.

Confirming the development on Friday, the Presidency announced that all the abducted pupils and teachers had been successfully rescued through coordinated efforts involving security agencies.

Authorities have yet to disclose details of the operation or the circumstances surrounding the victims' release. There has also been no official confirmation on whether any ransom was paid.

The victims are expected to undergo medical examinations and receive psychosocial support before reuniting fully with their families.

The Federal Government and Oyo State Government have commended security personnel involved in the operation and reiterated their commitment to strengthening security around schools and communities to prevent similar attacks.
