₦10m for Almost 10 Communities: LEYTA Rejects Governor AbdulRazaq’s Kwara Flood Relief, Demands Lasting Solution
The Lafiagi Emirate Youth Transparent Association (LEYTA) has rejected the ₦10 million flood relief fund provided by the Kwara State Government under Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for victims across almost 10 affected communities in Lafiagi Emirate, describing the amount as inadequate compared to the scale of destruction caused by the flooding.
In a statement signed by the LEYTA Media Team on Saturday, October 3, 2026, the association commended Governor AbdulRazaq for visiting the affected communities, saying the visit demonstrated concern for the plight of flood victims.
However, LEYTA said the ₦10 million relief package was insufficient to address the needs of victims across the affected communities.
According to the association, the flooding destroyed farmlands and crops, damaged homes and disrupted the livelihoods of numerous families.
It said farming remains the major source of income for many riverine communities in the emirate, warning that the loss of this year's harvest could have serious consequences for affected households.
LEYTA said sharing ₦10 million among almost 10 affected communities would leave limited resources to address the immediate needs of victims, including food, clean water, shelter, bedding and medical supplies.
The association therefore called on Governor AbdulRazaq and the Kwara State Government to increase the relief package and ensure that adequate assistance reaches all affected communities.
It also urged the government to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the damage to determine the specific needs of each affected village.
Beyond immediate relief, LEYTA called for lasting measures to tackle recurring flooding across Lafiagi Emirate.
The association said repeated flooding continues to threaten farms, homes and livelihoods, making long-term flood prevention and mitigation measures necessary rather than relying solely on temporary relief whenever disasters occur.
LEYTA also appealed to well-meaning individuals, non-governmental organisations and relevant government agencies to support affected communities while efforts are made to provide a more adequate response.
The association reaffirmed its readiness to cooperate with the Kwara State Government, Governor AbdulRazaq and other stakeholders to provide immediate assistance to victims and develop sustainable solutions to recurring flooding in Lafiagi Emirate.
