Kwara Teachers: 1,220 Disengaged Workers Appeal to AbdulRazaq for Second Chance
About 1,220 disengaged teachers in Kwara State have appealed to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to reconsider their situation and reinstate them into the state’s teaching workforce.
The teachers, operating under the aegis of the Sunset Teachers, made the appeal on Saturday, October 24, 2026, through their Deputy Coordinator, Wasiu Yunusa, who called on the state government to review their cases and give them another opportunity to return to the classroom.
Yunusa explained that the affected teachers were among those recruited in January 2019, towards the end of the previous administration. According to him, a total of 2,214 teachers employed during that period were subsequently disengaged by the current administration, although some were later reinstated.
He said approximately 1,220 teachers remained affected and were still seeking government intervention to regain their jobs.
Teachers Recall Earlier Assurance
The deputy coordinator recalled that when Governor AbdulRazaq assumed office, the affected teachers were reportedly assured that they would not be penalised merely because their employment took place towards the end of the previous administration.
However, Yunusa said the teachers later learnt through online reports that workers recruited in 2019 had been disengaged.
He explained that the affected teachers subsequently met with the governor to seek clarification on their situation. According to him, they were directed to reapply for their positions, a directive they complied with in the hope of being considered for reinstatement.
Despite completing the reapplication process, Yunusa said many of the teachers were still waiting for a favourable decision from the government.
Prolonged Disengagement Raises Concerns
The Sunset Teachers expressed concern over the economic and social difficulties confronting the affected workers, many of whom have families and other dependants to support.
Yunusa noted that the prolonged loss of employment had placed considerable financial pressure on the teachers, making it increasingly difficult for them to meet their personal and family responsibilities.
He appealed to the state government to consider their circumstances and provide a pathway for their return to active service.
The group maintained that reinstating the affected teachers would help restore their livelihoods while enabling them to continue contributing to the development of education in Kwara State.
Appeal for Government Intervention
The teachers disclosed that they had submitted several appeal letters to Governor AbdulRazaq, requesting that their cases be reviewed and their disengagement reconsidered.
They urged the governor to revisit the matter with compassion and fairness, expressing hope that the administration would respond positively to their request.
The group further appealed to relevant authorities to give the matter urgent attention, stressing that the affected teachers were seeking an opportunity to return to work and rebuild their livelihoods.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kwara State Government had not publicly responded to the latest appeal.
The affected teachers are awaiting further action from the state government on their request for reinstatement.
