Massive Protests Erupt Across Spain as Thousands Demand Affordable Housing
Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets across Spain to demand affordable housing, lower rents and stronger protection for tenants amid growing concerns over the country’s housing crisis.
Demonstrations were held in Madrid and several other cities, with protesters carrying placards and chanting slogans calling for urgent government action to make housing more accessible. Organisers said the protests reflected growing frustration among tenants struggling with rising rents and housing costs.
In Madrid, authorities estimated that about 70,000 people participated, while organisers put the figure much higher. Protesters also called for stronger measures against evictions and restrictions on some forms of short-term and room rentals.
The demonstrations came shortly after Spain’s parliament rejected two emergency housing measures proposed by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s minority government. The proposals were aimed at strengthening tenant protections and addressing rising housing costs.
The protests have increased pressure on the Spanish government as housing affordability continues to dominate public debate, with campaigners demanding long-term measures to ensure that ordinary people can afford to rent or buy homes.
