One person has been confirmed dead while several others sustained injuries after a commercial bus carrying 21 passengers crashed and caught fire along the Oko-Olowo Expressway in Ilorin, Kwara State.

The accident occurred on Sunday, October 4, 2026, around Iye-Maja Junction. According to the Kwara State Fire Service, the bus, with registration number DTH840SA, reportedly suffered a tyre puncture while in motion, causing the driver to lose control.

The vehicle subsequently somersaulted before bursting into flames. The Kwara State Fire Service said it received a distress call and arrived at the scene at about 6:35pm, where firefighters immediately commenced rescue operations.
Firefighters evacuated the passengers from the burning vehicle, while those injured were taken to a hospital for medical treatment. One passenger, however, was confirmed dead at the scene.

The Public Relations Officer of the Kwara State Fire Service, PFO Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, expressed sympathy to the family of the deceased and wished those injured a quick recovery.

The Chief Fire Officer, CFS Alabi Muhammed, also commiserated with the bereaved family and urged motorists, particularly commercial drivers, to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained and roadworthy before travelling.

He advised motorists to regularly inspect critical components, including tyres, brakes and electrical systems, noting that identifying mechanical problems early could prevent accidents and save lives.

The Fire Service further urged motorists to exercise caution on highways and promptly contact emergency agencies whenever road crashes or other emergencies occur.
