Two AK-47 Rifles Recovered as Kwara Police Uncover Suspected Gun-Running Network
Police operatives in Kwara State have recovered two AK-47 rifles, three magazines and 42 rounds of live ammunition following the interception of a commercial vehicle along the Alapa–Oko-Olowo axis of Ilorin.
The firearms were recovered during a stop-and-search operation carried out by the police as part of ongoing intelligence-led efforts to prevent the movement of illegal weapons and disrupt criminal activities across the state.
The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Umaru M., allegedly initially denied ownership of the bag in which the firearms and ammunition were found. However, during further investigation, he reportedly admitted to conveying the weapons.
According to the police, Umaru's statement led investigators to another suspected member of a gun-running network identified as Dan Yarubawa. He allegedly told the police that Yarubawa gave him the firearms for onward delivery to another individual, identified as Dahiru, outside Kwara State.
The police have since intensified efforts to arrest the other individuals allegedly linked to the suspected gun-running network and establish the full extent of their activities.
The Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, CP Ojo Adekimi, assured the public that the command would continue to employ proactive and intelligence-led policing strategies to identify and disrupt threats to public safety.
He also called on members of the public to provide credible and timely information to the police, stressing that cooperation from citizens remains crucial to maintaining security across the state.
