The Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with various state governments, has approved the pardon of more than 8,300 inmates across correctional facilities nationwide as part of efforts to decongest prisons and strengthen rehabilitation initiatives.

The decision followed recommendations from relevant authorities and advisory bodies and forms part of broader justice sector reforms aimed at tackling overcrowding in custodial centres. Beneficiaries of the clemency include inmates convicted of minor offences, those who have served a significant portion of their sentences, as well as individuals with health challenges and those who demonstrated good conduct while in custody.

Officials explained that the exercise goes beyond easing congestion, stressing that it provides an opportunity for reintegration by offering deserving individuals a second chance in society. They added that the selection process was rigorous, involving detailed case reviews to ensure only qualified inmates were considered.

Authorities further emphasized the importance of sustained reforms within the criminal justice system, including speeding up trials and adopting alternative sentencing measures, to prevent a recurrence of overcrowding in correctional facilities.
