Staff Salary Withheld, Access Restricted Over HYPPADEC’s Visit to Lafiagi Waterworks.
Fresh concerns have emerged over the state of the Lafiagi Waterworks in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, with sources alleging that workers at the facility have been directed not to allow unauthorized persons access to the premises for independent scrutiny.
The development comes as residents continue to lament lack of water in the community and the poor state of the facility meant to alleviate their suffering.
Information made available to NupekoTV by sources familiar with activities at the facility alleged that staff members have been instructed by senior authorities to restrict access to the facility, preventing individuals and groups from inspecting its operations or equipment.
According to the sources, the directive followed an earlier inspection of the facility by officials of the Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC), who reportedly visited the waterworks to assess its condition and operational status.
The sources further claimed that after the visit was made public, some staff members of the facility were queried, while the salaries of certain workers were allegedly withheld over issues linked to the visitation.
For many residents of Lafiagi, however, the bigger concern remains the prolonged lack of public water supply.
Community members say the waterworks has not operated effectively for several years, forcing households to depend on boreholes, hand-dug wells, and commercial water vendors for their daily needs.
Residents who spoke with NupekoTV called on the Kwara State Government and other relevant agencies to to take urgent steps toward rehabilitating the facility in the interest of public health and community development.
NupekoTV will continue to monitor developments and welcomes responses from the authorities to ensure a fair and balanced presentation of the issues surrounding the facility.
