Governor Orders Dismissal, Prosecution of Staff Over Alleged Sale of Donated Items at General Hospital
Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has ordered the investigation, dismissal and prosecution of staff of Umaisha General Hospital over allegations that medical items donated to the facility were sold.
The governor gave the directive on Wednesday during the inauguration of newly appointed commissioners in Lafia, following allegations raised by Ibrahim Sa’ad, the lawmaker representing Ugya/Umaisha Constituency in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly.
Sa’ad had alleged that items he donated to the hospital, including orthopaedic mattresses, standing fans and ceiling fans, were missing and some had allegedly been sold.
Governor Sule directed the Commissioner for Health, Dr Gaza Gomna, to investigate the matter and identify those responsible.
“I have already asked the Honourable Commissioner for Health to investigate, dismiss and prosecute them,” Sule said.
The governor described the alleged diversion or sale of items donated to improve healthcare services as unacceptable and said dismissal alone would not be enough if those involved were found culpable.
He directed that the outcome of the investigation be submitted within the week.
Meanwhile, Sa’ad said the Ministry of Health and the Hospital Management Board had responded to the matter and provided clarification regarding the donated items.
He explained that the items were donated more than two years ago, with some kept in the hospital store while others were being used by staff residing in the hospital quarters.
Sa’ad said his intervention was aimed at ensuring accountability and improving healthcare delivery in the area and was not intended to discredit the Ministry of Health or any government official.
The governor’s directive therefore remains subject to the outcome of the investigation, and no hospital staff member has been established as guilty based solely on the allegations.
