Edu Local Government Abductees Regain Freedom, One Dies in Captivity

Five of the six residents abducted from Rukpete Village in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State have regained their freedom, while one victim reportedly died in captivity.

NupekoTV reported that the victims were kidnapped during a late-night attack on Rukpete, in the Lafiagi Emirate, on Monday, June 8, 2026.

According to a community source who spoke with a NupekoTV-Lafiagi correspondent, suspected bandits stormed the community at about 11:00 p.m. and initially abducted seven residents.

The source said one elderly victim was later released, while the remaining six—four men and two women—were taken into the bush.

It was earlier reported that some of the abducted victims were children under the age of 14, raising serious concerns over their safety.

NupekoTV-Lafiagi gathered that five of the six victims have now regained their freedom. However, the release was marred by tragedy as one of the victims reportedly died while in captivity.

The circumstances surrounding the victim’s death were not immediately available as of the time of filing this report.

The development has renewed concerns over the security situation in rural communities across Edu and other parts of Kwara North, where farmers continue to face threats of kidnapping and bandit attacks.

Residents are again calling on the government and security agencies to strengthen security operations in vulnerable communities and take decisive measures to prevent any further attacks.
