Rising Waters: Egwa River Triggers Fresh Flood Fears in Kwara Communities

Farmers and residents living along the Egwa River valley in Lafiagi and neighbouring communities in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State have been urged to remain vigilant following a rise in the river’s water level.

The development has raised concerns among residents, particularly those living and farming in low-lying areas that are vulnerable to flooding during the rainy season.

Farmers have been advised to monitor the situation closely and, where possible, move farm produce, equipment and livestock to safer and higher ground to minimise potential losses.

Residents have also been cautioned against unnecessary movement close to the riverbanks, especially as the water level continues to rise.

The warning comes amid the peak of Nigeria’s rainy season, a period often associated with increased rainfall, rising river levels and flooding in vulnerable communities across the country.

Lafiagi Emirate and surrounding communities in Edu LGA have experienced seasonal flooding in previous years, with some incidents resulting in the displacement of residents and damage to farmlands and other property.

Community members are therefore encouraged to stay alert, follow safety advisories and pay attention to further updates from relevant authorities and local leaders.

As the situation develops, residents in flood-prone areas are advised to take precautionary measures early rather than wait until rising waters pose an immediate threat to lives and livelihoods.
