Shock in Kwara North as Dantsoho Withdraws, Endorses Kwara Central Candidate for Governor

There is growing unease in Kwara North following the sudden withdrawal of APC governorship aspirant, Prince Haliru Dantsoho Mahmud, who has now thrown his weight behind a Kwara Central contender.

Dantsoho, a strong advocate of the “Kwara North Agenda,” stunned supporters when he announced his decision at a political gathering in Ilorin, effectively halting his own ambition.

Sources within the political bloc described the move as a “major setback” for the district, which has long complained of marginalisation since 1999.

In his remarks, Dantsoho defended the decision, claiming it was based on fresh consultations and the need for unity across the state.

He endorsed Ambassador Abdulfatai Yahaya Seriki Gambari, citing his loyalty to the ruling APC and alignment with both the state and federal leadership.

Kwara Central is considered the most populous and significant due to its numerical strength and dominance in voting, remains a critical factor in determining the outcome of governorship elections in the state.

However, critics argue that Dantsoho’s move undermines the struggle for equity and further entrenches the dominance of Kwara Central in the state’s power structure.

Attempts to reach key stakeholders in Kwara North for comments were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
