53-Year-Old Woman Sentenced to One Month in Prison for Dumping Refuse in Lagos Drainage

A 53-year-old woman, Nelly Monday, has been sentenced to one month in prison for dumping refuse in a drainage channel in Lagos State.

Monday was arrested in Meiran on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, after she was allegedly caught disposing of refuse into a drainage channel during rainfall.

The arrest followed enforcement efforts by authorities aimed at curbing indiscriminate waste disposal and preventing the blockage of drainage channels across the state.

The authorities have continued to warn residents against dumping refuse in drains, particularly during rainfall, citing the risk of blocked waterways and flooding.

The conviction underscores the Lagos State Government’s renewed efforts to enforce environmental regulations and hold residents accountable for practices capable of worsening flooding.

Residents have also been urged to dispose of their waste at designated collection points and comply with environmental regulations to keep drainage channels free from refuse.
