NAFDAC Rejects Online Claims Over Alleged Fake and Adulterated Food Products

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has dismissed unverified claims circulating on social media alleging that some food and consumer products in Nigeria are fake, adulterated or unsafe for consumption.

The agency said allegations made online should not be treated as established facts without proper investigation and laboratory testing. NAFDAC stressed that products suspected of being counterfeit or adulterated must undergo regulatory verification before such claims can be confirmed.

The controversy followed the circulation of social media posts listing several products, including yoghurt, palm oil, apples, soy sauce, olive oil, chicken, fish, water and beverages, as allegedly unsafe. NAFDAC said it takes reports of suspected violations seriously and investigates credible complaints through its established regulatory procedures.

The agency also disclosed that its enforcement operations between May and July 2026 covered 6,233 facilities across the country, leading to the removal of 7,210 non-compliant regulated products from circulation. According to NAFDAC, food and water products accounted for 3,633 of the items removed during the exercise.

NAFDAC urged members of the public to verify information concerning suspected fake or adulterated products through its official channels and report suspicious products directly to the agency. It warned that spreading unverified information could create unnecessary panic among consumers and undermine legitimate regulatory efforts.
