Police Arrest Suspect Over Fake OPay Shutdown Screenshots
The Nigerian Police Force National Cybercrime Centre has announced the arrest of a suspect, Hafsat Abubakar, over the creation and circulation of fake screenshots claiming that fintech company OPay was going on a break and would shut down its operations.
The police said the fabricated screenshots were circulated on social media and falsely suggested that OPay had announced plans to suspend or discontinue its services. The development reportedly generated concern among users and members of the public.
According to the Force Public Relations Officer, investigators deployed digital forensic tools to trace the origin of the fake publication to an X (formerly Twitter) account operated by the suspect.
The police said Hafsat Abubakar was subsequently arrested on September 4, 2026, following the investigation. Authorities are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the creation and circulation of the alleged fake screenshots.
The police have warned members of the public against creating or sharing false information capable of causing confusion or misleading users of financial and other essential services. The case remains under investigation as the authorities continue to take steps against the spread of fabricated content online.
