OP-ED: EARLY SIGNS FROM KWARA STATE’S 2027 GOVERNORSHIP RACE

In the unfolding political conversations ahead of the 2027 governorship race in Kwara State, three names consistently dominate discussions across party lines, ARABA, Seriki, and Mustapha. While each remains a formidable and widely accepted figure, a growing number of observers believe Engr. Femi Sanni ARABA has positioned himself ahead in the contest for the party’s ticket.

The reasons are neither accidental nor far-fetched.

First is the depth of his community engagement. Beyond political messaging, ARABA has built a reputation around visible and impactful interventions, healthcare outreach, youth empowerment, and sustained support for artisans and market women. His Mobile Clinic initiative and humanitarian programmes have allowed him to connect directly with everyday citizens in ways that transcend traditional political mobilisation.

Secondly, his appeal cuts across multiple demographics; youths, traders, professionals, and long-standing party loyalists. In politics, popularity becomes far more potent when it evolves into an emotional connection, and many believe this is where ARABA currently holds a strategic advantage.

Another defining factor is momentum. The steady rise of endorsements, independent support groups, and stakeholder alignment from different parts of the state gives the impression of a movement quietly gathering strength ahead of 2027. Among party faithful, there is also the belief that his personality and visibility could energise the base and improve electoral prospects.

This is not at the discount of the political weight of Seriki and Mustapha, both of whom remain respected contenders. However, the prevailing atmosphere suggests that ARABA’s blend of accessibility, visibility, and unblemished public image offers him a slight edge in the race for the gubernatorial ticket.

That said, politics is ultimately a game of strategy, alliances, zoning considerations, and timing. The final outcome will depend heavily on internal party dynamics and how effectively each aspirant sustains support as the primaries approach.

For now, in the court of public sentiment and grassroots perception, ARABA appears to be standing tall among the leading contenders for the 2027 governorship ticket of Kwara State.
