A youth and development advocate, Sanchitagi Qasim, has criticised the Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, CP Ojo Adekimi, accusing him of failing to demonstrate the empathy, professionalism and leadership expected of the state's police command amid growing insecurity.

In a statement on Saturday, Qasim argued that the Kwara State Police Command should be an institution driven by intelligence, professionalism, empathy and service to the people, stressing that its leadership must consistently reflect those values.

He expressed disappointment over the Commissioner's recent remarks dismissing the widely reported figure of 176 Woro victims allegedly still in captivity, saying the focus should have been on reassuring affected families rather than disputing the number of victims.

According to him, if the police reject the reported figure as unofficial, they have a responsibility to provide an accurate and verified account of those still being held.

"The responsibility of the Commissioner is not merely to dispute figures but to demonstrate measurable progress in tackling insecurity, reassuring affected communities, and ensuring that every victim remains a priority until justice is served," he said.

Qasim also referenced an earlier controversy involving a viral video that allegedly showed women being assaulted during a protest. He noted that while the police had described the footage as AI-generated, the Command did not publicly release evidence to substantiate that claim or identify those allegedly responsible for creating or circulating the purported fake video.

He further cited a subsequent investigation by Informat 24/7, which maintained that the video was authentic, adding that the police had not publicly responded to the outlet's findings.

The advocate argued that such incidents have contributed to declining public confidence in the Command, saying that dismissing public narratives without presenting verified alternatives leaves citizens with more questions than answers.

Qasim further contended that the worsening security situation in Kwara State should be the Commissioner's primary concern. He urged the police leadership to prioritise effective action, transparent communication and support for victims' families instead of engaging in disputes over casualty or abduction figures.

"The people of Kwara are looking to the police for protection, transparency and hope," he said. "The focus should be on restoring confidence through decisive action against insecurity."

The Kwara State Police Command has maintained that the figure of 176 persons reportedly still in captivity is not an official police figure, urging the public to rely on verified information from security agencies. As of the time of filing this report, the Command had not publicly released an official figure for the number of Woro victims still in captivity.
