Niger: Three Die as Governor Bago’s Convoy Vehicle Collides With Private Car

Three people have reportedly died in a fatal road accident involving a vehicle in the convoy of Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, and a private car along the Minna–Bida Road.

According to Daily Trust, the accident occurred at about 11 a.m. on Monday at Gidan Mangoro community in Niger State, as the governor was reportedly returning from Bida. The collision involved a government-owned Hilux van and a private vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.

A resident of Gidan Mangoro, Danjuma Umar, told Daily Trust that the occupants of the private car, believed to be postgraduate students of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, died in the crash. He alleged that the accident occurred when the Hilux driver attempted an improper overtaking manoeuvre, resulting in a head-on collision.

Umar added that the private car was driven by a woman who lived in the community, while the occupants of the Hilux reportedly sustained serious injuries.

A staff member of Minna General Hospital also confirmed to Daily Trust that three victims died following the accident. The source disclosed that two victims were brought to the hospital dead, while the third died in the emergency unit after being admitted for treatment.

The report further stated that some injured victims were referred to IBB Specialist Hospital for additional medical attention. Among those reportedly injured was a former local government council chairman, who sustained fractures to his legs.

The Niger State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Aishat Sa’adu, confirmed the accident, explaining that her personnel arrived at the scene after the victims had been evacuated.

Although she acknowledged that the crash resulted in fatalities, Sa’adu said she could not immediately confirm the total number of people involved in the incident.
