Public primary and secondary schools across Oyo State may witness a shutdown of academic activities as the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, has directed members to withdraw their services indefinitely over the continued abduction of teachers and pupils.
The directive, which takes effect from Monday, June 1, 2026, was conveyed in a circular issued by the union's State Secretary, Comrade Salami B. Olukayode, following instructions from the national leadership of the NUT.
According to the union, the decision was prompted by the prolonged captivity of abducted teachers and learners, a situation it says has created fear, anxiety, and uncertainty among educators, parents, and communities across the state.
The NUT noted that the lingering insecurity has discouraged many parents from sending their children to school while increasing tension in affected communities.
The union stated that the industrial action is intended to draw greater attention to the plight of the victims and compel authorities to intensify efforts toward their safe rescue and return.
Teachers have been urged to remain law-abiding and prioritize their safety by staying at home pending further directives.
Reaffirming its solidarity with the abducted victims and their families, the union said it would continue engagements with relevant authorities until all those in captivity are safely reunited with their loved ones.
The development is expected to significantly affect learning activities in public schools across Oyo State as teachers comply with the directive.
